Analogue Tectonic Modelling Laboratories

Longviewlab-LML

ATML is one of the largest analogue modelling facilities in Europe with a successful track record (~30 years) of industry-funded research in tectonic simulations and fault modelling.

activities

The laboratories include ~10 modular experimental rigs for simulation of rock deformation in different tectonic settings and scales ranging from micro-scale (mm-cm) to continental margins (100s–1000s km). The laboratories include granular material preparation facilities and a geomaterial research laboratory with mechanical testing including a specialist ringshear tester and a Uniaxial Tester. DIC and DVC strain monitoring techniques as well as Digital Volume Correlation for 3D volume strain analysis has been developed and tested in a long-term collaboration with our industry partner LaVision.

dic

running

The computational infrastructure includes specialist computer workstations with dedicated industry-standard software for strain analysis, seismic interpretation and structural modelling. The modelling laboratories are being supported by a specialist engineer and dedicated mechanical workshop in the department/school.

We regularly welcome and host international visiting researchers and postgraduate research students for collaborative research in our Analogue Tectonic modelling Laboratories, and support outreach activities and public engagements ranging including supporting publishers and artists.
